Two members of Dads Against Predators confronted a man inside the Lincoln Park Kroger recently because they said he was there to meet an underage boy for sex.
According to the group’s website, the purpose of DAP is to “expose these guys to their communities” because they believe “the people have a right to know.”
Joshua Mundy, 30, a member of the group, said he went to Kroger looking for a man he said reached out to him on the social media app Grindr thinking he was a 14-year-old boy.
He went to the store with a videographer intending to question the man on camera and then post the footage.
He and the videographer followed the man around the store and eventually into the parking lot as Mundy screamed to shoppers that the man was there to meet a 14-year-old boy for sex.
Yelling at alleged predators is a signature move for DAP members.
“I’m yelling to expose you,” Mundy said. “I can give them that nightmare and that’s what they deserve.”
Mundy is unapologetic and said it is not their practice to contact local law enforcement to give them a heads up on their intention.
“I’d rather ask for forgiveness than permission,” Mundy said.
Lincoln Park Police Chief Scott Lavis said he is aware of the Kroger confrontation, but declined to comment other than saying he is familiar with groups like DAP.
It is not clear if police are investigating the man caught up in the Kroger sting.
Mundy said police don’t exactly embrace their tactics, so they don’t notify them of their plan.
In fact, DAP has been banned from numerous stores and accused of “luring” people to locations and then confronting them about their sexual plans.
DAP posted the alleged confrontation at Kroger on social media and asked readers to share it.
While many readers appeared to appreciate the information, they seemed confused why the police were not involved.
Many who saw the post said police should have been informed.
According to Mundy, after the scene inside Kroger, an officer arrived and questioned him about what was going on, but by that time, the man had already left the location.
Mundy told the officer how he was contacted by the man first while posing as a 14-year-old boy and was instructed to go to a bathroom stall that had a red string on it.
A call requesting comment from a Kroger representative was not returned.
DAP hopes once a predator is exposed, the police in that jurisdiction will step in and handle the situation.
Mundy is not from the Downriver area, but at the time of the filming, had been staying with a friend in Lincoln Park.
He travels the region and said he’s visited Downriver in the past.
“I helped get an arrest the last time I was in Lincoln Park,” Mundy said. “That was last year.”
He is a father of three and said he loves his children and wants to be a part of their lives, yet he knows pursuing alleged predators can be dangerous.
There is no way for him to tell if someone is going to become angry or violent, which he said has occurred in the past.
