Dansville High School students are reaping the benefits of a physical education curriculum that now includes lessons in self-defense.

The Foundation for Dansville Education is sponsoring the unique program designed to promote personal safety, confidence and empower students.

The classes include practical skills and “knowledge to navigate challenging situations,” which Dansville school officials said is in line with the district’s “holistic development of its students.”

Dansville students receive self-defense instruction from Eric Buchak, Studio Manager at Empower Martial Arts in Geneseo.

Empower Martial Arts developed classes

The Foundation contracted with Jennifer Smith, owner and instructor at Empower Martial Arts in Geneseo, to provide the classes.

Smith and studio manager Eric Buchak came to Dansville in the spring to offer a session with staff. They were then invited back to provide training for high school students.
