DD2 gets $500K grant for bus safety | Community News | #schoolsaftey

Dorchester School District Two received a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to bolster safety on all school buses across the district.

As one of just 206 grant recipients nationwide and four school districts in South Carolina, DD2 will use the funds to add more video cameras to approximately 180 school buses. The competitive grant is from the Office of Community-Oriented Policing Services (COPS) through the School Violence Prevention Program.

“Our Transportation team is honored to receive this support from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services,” said Steve Shope, DD2 transportation director. “These funds will advance our top priority, which is safely transporting our students and staff to and from school.”

Each bus will have six closed-circuit video cameras, which significantly increase coverage, deter misbehavior and provide a safer environment for students and staff on board.
