Deep Fusion and Night mode may come to jailbroken older iPhones running iOS 13

You know Apple uses an in-house platform, iOS for their smartphones. Even with this exclusivity, we can see that they’re slow to implement many features which Android phones already had (take wireless charging for example).

Just like Android, iOS also get upgraded each year. The newest version, iOS 13 went live on 19 September. By far, they have released six incremental updates, with last one being a HomePod exclusive.

iOS 13

Ever since the public release, iOS 13 was irking the users with multiple issues. We reported an unsolved bug pertaining to Personal Hotspot earlier. Moreover, Gmail app crashing is another widespread issue. So, is the duplicate messages problem on Outlook.

Despite all these issues, Apple introduced a few new camera features with iOS 13 on iPhone 11 series. The first one is Night mode. In case you are naive, it is the Cupertino company’s implementation to brighten images taken in the absence of adequate lighting.

The second one is Deep Fusion, which went live with iOS 13.2. It combines multiple shots into one so that the outcome defies a normal image in detailing. Let me quote the words from the corporation’s marketing chief.
It shoots nine images, before you press the shutter button it’s already shot four short images, four secondary images. When you press the shutter button it takes one long exposure, and then in just one second, the Neural Engine analyzes the fused combination of long and short images picking the best among them, selecting all the pixels, and pixel by pixel, going through 24 million pixels to optimize for detail and low noise, like you see in the sweater there. It’s amazing, this is the first time a Neural Processor is responsible for generating the output image. It is computational photography mad science.

What if you don’t have a new iPhone but you would like to try these features on your older one? Given your device runs on iOS 13, there’s ray of hope. However, you have to ensure the handset is jailbroken.

The picture shows a config file from MediaToolbox.framework and a list of neural network files for deep fusion. All the rest, including Camera app assets (i.e. icons) and headers , is exactly the same for both iPhone 11 and iPhone XS, at least.
It gives us the possibility to tweak the config just like the good old times.

When the tweaks go online, we will update this story. And, don’t forget to check out our iOS section so that you will never miss anything pertaining to the company.
