Something you may have picked up on by now is that Fox News, and its sister network, Fox Business, are effectively state-run TV in the age of Trump. There’s little the president can do that won’t get Sean Hannity or Jeanine Pirro or Stuart Varney or the barking seals at Fox & Friends to applaud him for being the greatest human being on earth and, in fact, on at least one occasion the words Trump is “the chosen one” who was “sent by God to do great things” were uttered on the network’s airwaves. Naturally, Rupert Murdoch’s employees were never going to open a segment by accurately pointing out that the administration’s response to the novel coronavirus has been a disaster of epic proportions, or that putting a guy who helped cause an HIV outbreak in charge of this thing is like putting Eric Trump in charge of NASA‘s Astrophysics division, or that perhaps stalling so as not to worry the markets wasn’t the best laid plan. Still, a segment that aired Monday night managed to be chilling in its its thesis of the deadly virus, which was, basically: This whole thing is a liberal scam designed to hurt our fearless leader, Donald Trump.

“We’ve reached a tipping point,” Fox Business anchor Trish Regan said at the top of her show. “The hate is boiling over. Many in the liberal media are using coronavirus in an attempt to demonize and destroy the president…. This is yet another attempt to impeach the president, and sadly, it seems they care very little for any of the destruction they leave in their wake, losses in the stock market. This, unfortunately, is all just part of political casualties for them.” Then, as we assume she is contractually obligated to do, Regan brought up the Russia investigation. “Like with the [Robert] Mueller investigation, like with the Ukraine-gate,” she said, like a TV show host from the Twilight Zone, “they don’t care who they hurt, whether it be their need to create mass hysteria to encourage a market sell-off unlike anything we’ve seen recently, or whether it be to create mass hysteria in order to stop our economy dead in its tracks.” In other words, per Regan, keeping the public apprised of a virus that has killed nearly 4,000 people thus far is all an underhanded attempt to tank the market and Trump.
