Since launching their ad-supported streaming service in December, Plex has been looking at the possibilities for new features that will allow the company to be even greater force in the competitive world of streaming services.
In a press release announcing the launch of the streaming service, Plex described themselves as “a true one stop media service” that brings free on-demand movies and TV shows together with podcasts, web shows, news, music, OTA TV, and personal media collections.
“Plex was born out of a passion for media and entertainment, and offering free ad-supported premium movies and TV shows is just the latest step in our mission to bring all your favorite content together in one place,” said Keith Valory, CEO of Plex in the press release. “What started more than a decade ago as a passion project to make accessing media on connected devices easier has evolved into the most comprehensive streaming platform in the industry, used by millions of people around the world.”
Now, Tech Crunch has reported that Plex is planning their next wave of features, including subscription channel add-ons, which would likely look similar to the setup of The Roku Channel. For the content that can’t be provided directly through Plex, a deep linking feature would allow users to search for content with Plex and play it on the platform where its offered.
Plex told Tech Crunch that they would first focus on the streaming service they launched last month and a subscription feature before developing the deep linking feature. The new features could launch as early as this year.
