A parent’s concern over a gun at North High School led to a student’s arrest Thursday morning.
The unidentified parent contacted North High School officials with concerns a student had come to school with a weapon, said Principal Christopher Maniece in a letter to families. The district’s public safety staff and school officials found the gun while searching the student, whose name hasn’t been released.

The weapon was “secured” quickly the school did not go into lockdown, Maniece said. The student fled campus before Des Moines Police officers arrived.
Police with the help of a police dog found the student hiding in the 3000 block of Fifth Avenue and arrested him just before 10 a.m., said Sgt. Paul Parizek, the department’s spokesperson.
The entire incident lasted about 47 minutes. No one was injured.

Read the letter to families:
Dear North families:
I want to make sure you are aware of an incident that took place at the start of the school day.
This morning a parent contacted North to share their concern that a student may arrive at school with a weapon. Our DMPS public safety staff and North administration escorted that student to the office where they were searched and a firearm was found in their possession. The weapon was secured and the Des Moines Police Department immediately notified.
Because the weapon was secured, there was no need for North to go on lockdown or make any changes to the school day. The student also ran off campus and away from North, and the police pursued and arrested him.
We are grateful for the parent who notified us of this matter, and appreciate everyone who ever shares a concern about any matter that may impact the health and safety of anyone at North.
Thank you for you and your family being a part of the North High community.
Sincerely,
Dr. Christopher ManiecePrincipal
