Did lawmakers increase teacher pay, school funding? | #schoolsaftey

The Texas Legislature ended its regular 88th legislative session with public schools slated to get about $1.4 billion in funding, but other proposals to boost teacher pay and per pupil spending remain hanging on the fate of a special session.

School board members from across the state and representatives from teacher and state advocacy groups gathered at the Capitol on May 29, the regular session’s last day, to express a general frustration with lawmakers’ priorities.

“The improper linkage between private school vouchers and public school funding cost our schools billions of dollars,” said Christy Rome, executive director of the Texas School Coalition.

School choice, also known as vouchers, largely dominated education-related discussions during the session. The controversial program would give parents public money to help pay for private school tuition or other related costs.
