The 8 On Your Side team received close to two dozen emails from viewers about a letter from the U.S. Department of Justice informing them of a data breach.They want to know: Is it a scam?No, it’s not. The letter is legitimate.The letter tells recipients their personal information was compromised through a data breach at a DOJ contractor.That contractor – Greylock McKinnon Associates – provides support services in civil lawsuits.What lawsuits or legal cases may be involved is not known. The justice department has not commented on the incident.This breach happened through a ransomware attack and was discovered in May 2023. The letter indicates that Social Security numbers, birthdates, Medicare numbers, health insurance and driver’s license numbers of more than 340,000 people may have been compromised.Victims are being offered free identity theft protection services for one year and are being encouraged to get free copies of their credit reports. The information on how to do that is contained in the letter.
