JACKSON, Tenn. — Love in the air around Valentine’s Day — however, people need to be cautious of those who turn an online romance into an opportunity for money.
Scammers can pose as potential romantic partners to lure people into fraudulent investment schemes.
Seniors, who can often be isolated or lonely, are particularly susceptible.
Romance scammers may have a reluctance to meet in-person or prefer a long-distance relationship.
They might discuss wealth or business success and pressure you for money, especially through a new app or website.
“Be sure to ask a lot of questions,” said Claire McHenry, NASAA President. “If you don’t understand the answers, just don’t invest. And you can also contact your state securities regulator if you have concerns.”
It’s important to keep your guard up, do a background check and look for red flags.
