DragonForce ransomware lists NZ horse racing platform on dark web

Threat actors have claimed a cyber attack on New Zealand online horse racing platform EvoEvents, allegedly having stolen data.

The DragonForce ransomware group listed Hamilton-based EvoEvents on its dark web leak site on 8 June 2024.

The threat group added that it had allegedly exfiltrated 6.14 gigabytes of data, but it did not provide any details as to what the data was. It is currently unclear if the claims are legitimate.

Cyber Daily reached out to EvoEvents, which said it was unaware of the incident.

At the time of writing, DragonForce said it would publish the stolen data in just over 24 days, meaning if the breach is legitimate, data will be published on 5 July.

DragonForce ransomware first appeared in November last year and is known for attacks on major organisations such as Coca-Cola Singapore and the Ohio lottery.

In Australia, the group claimed attacks on Yakult Australia and, most recently, published almost 300 gigabytes of data belonging to Australian immigration consultancy Aussizz, including student visa applications, passports, names, addresses, emails, ID cards, college transcripts and more.

There is a Malaysian hacktivist group that also goes by the name DragonForce and is known for malicious cyber campaigns against governments in Asia and the Middle East throughout 2021 and 2022. It is unclear if the two groups are the same, but the latter did announce its own ransomware in 2022.
