Effort underway to fund special-needs equipment at Wilkes-Barre parks | News | #specialneeds | #kids | #parenting | #parenting | #kids

Wilkes-Barre Mayor George Brown on Monday announced an initiative to purchase and install specialized playground equipment at city parks for community members with special needs.

Brown said he met Thursday with volunteers interested in raising the necessary funding, through eligible grants and donations.

The committee plans to begin these improvements at the Kirby Park playground and then expand the installation of special-needs playground equipment to other parks in the city. Just one example of possible equipment is a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round.

Those who are interested in donating to the Special Needs Playground Improvement Project can send a check made payable to Wilkes-Barre Special Needs Playground Fund to: Wilkes-Barre Special Needs Playground Fund, c/o Wilkes-Barre City, 40 E. Market St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18711.

A Facebook page and a PayPal donation link are in the works. The public and the media will be updated when both are launched, Brown said.

In addition to Brown, members of the mayor’s committee include Pastor Craig Gommer, Leana Pande, Carol Mirin, Jacqueline Deutsch, Audrey Gowan, Jodi Olenginski, Mona Pande and Christine Kurash.
