The Elyria City Schools Board of Education approved Whitely as school safety coordinator on June 28, according to a news release.

Whitely served as a high-ranking police officer and ultimately as Elyria police chief until he retired in 2021, the release said.

As the district’s lead on school safety, Whitely will oversee all safety and security practices and protocols, school safety plans, compliance and staff training, and he will assist school principals with emergency drills, according to the release.

Whitely also will supervise a new team of safety associates, who will have an eye for general security within the buildings and patrolling the grounds, the release said.

“I’m honored to accept this position with Elyria Schools and to return to serving the families of Elyria,” Whitely said in the release. “The safety and security of schools is our most critical responsibility, and I’m ready to build on the great work that’s already taking place in the district.
