Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a powerful tool for both security defenders and attackers. As this rapidly evolving technology continues to shape the cybersecurity landscape, there is a shortage of highly trained individuals with expertise in machine learning and large language models on both sides. Consequently, AI red teams have emerged as a crucial component to give defenders an advantage in protecting IT systems.

Daniel Fabian, the head of Google Red Teams, emphasizes the importance of AI red teams in empowering defenders. Having spent over a decade on Google’s traditional security red team, Fabian recognizes the need for hackers to bring their perspective to AI systems. About a year and a half ago, Google established a dedicated AI red team comprising experts in the field.

The fundamental premise of red teaming, regardless of whether it’s focused on traditional operations or AI, is to think like an adversary. Fabian, now leading all of Google’s red teaming activities, underscores the lack of available threat intelligence on real-world adversaries targeting machine learning systems. As the integration of machine learning features into more products increases, threat research in this area will become vital.

Among the specific AI-based attack techniques that AI red teams focus on are prompt injection attacks and backdooring models. Prompt injection attacks manipulate the output of large language models, overriding prior instructions. Backdooring a model involves implanting malicious code or providing poisoned data during training to alter the model’s behavior. Defending against these attacks often entails implementing classic security best practices, such as controlling access and protecting against malicious insiders.

AI red teams are also concerned with testing adversarial examples, which involve creating inputs designed to make the model produce incorrect outputs. While some adversarial examples may seem trivial, others can be more nefarious, potentially leading to serious consequences. Additionally, data poisoning has become an increasingly interesting area of research, highlighting the need for defenders to identify potentially poisoned data.

Fabian remains optimistic about the role of AI in cybersecurity defense. In the near future, ML systems and models will facilitate the identification of security vulnerabilities, benefiting defenders. However, in the short to medium term, miscreants may exploit vulnerabilities more easily and at a lower cost, requiring defenders to catch up and patch the holes. Nevertheless, Fabian believes that in the long run, the integration of machine learning capabilities will favor defenders over attackers, leading to more secure software development cycles.
