Extron technology is allowing students at a school in California to gain knowledge and skills in computer network maintenance and cybersecurity.

The Cyber Innovation Center at Canyon Springs High School is the first of its kind in a K-12 school in the US. It serves as an education facility, an esports and National Youth Defense competition venue, and a cybersecurity training resource for the community’s small businesses.

Integral to the teaching and esports competition activities is an extensive AV system powered by Extron switching, distribution, control and audio. The signal distribution throughout the facility is based on NAV AV-over-IP.

The Cyber Innovation Center – which comprises an esports computer lab, a classroom and an innovation lab – was created by converting 715 sq metres of underused auto and wood shop space into a technology-rich teaching venue.

The centre also houses mentoring conference rooms and hands-on workstations with server racks and network equipment.

The NAV AV-over IP system allows any AV source to be viewed and heard on any display. Supporting this main distribution backbone is a host of Extron devices including HDMI switchers, DTP wallplates, ShareLink Pro wireless presentation gateways, DMP audio DSP processors, XPA and NetPA amplifiers, Flat Field and SoundField speakers and subwoofers, IPCP Pro control processors, TouchLink Pro touchpanels, and the Extron Control app.

Donna Woods, Moreno Valley Unified School District’s career technical education cyber pathway instructor, says: “The AV systems provide a high-level impact and excellent impression to visitors and participants engaged in our community outreach programmes.

“Extron collaborated with our instructors during the AV system design to understand specific uses and applications for each course. As Extron customised the systems, they provided training and support during and after installation.

“Successes are not limited to the top academic students. We have cyber career pathway students from special-ed and English-as-a-second-language learners.

“It’s amazing when you see them working together. Every child feels welcome and participates in the educational offerings regardless of their academic knowledge or wherewithal.”
