Guwahati: In a shocking incident in Assam’s Sivasagar district, a family of three was arrested for the alleged murder of a young mother and the abduction of her 10-month-old infant daughter. The couple held in connection with the incident reportedly told the police that they wanted to hand over the baby to their daughter, who was childless. The third accused in the case is the son of the couple.
Nitumoni Lukhrakon, a resident of the Rajbari tea estate in Sivasagar, was found dead in a drain on Monday. While strangulation marks on her neck confirmed she was murdered, her baby daughter was reported missing.
A day later, Nitumoni’s sister confirmed that she doubted one Hiramai Gogoi of Tengapukhuri in Charaideo district for the abduction and murder of her sister. Acting on her complaint, the police reportedly picked up Hiramai and her husband Basanta Gogoi from Simaluguri railway station, and when interrogated, the doubts of the victim’s sister were found valid.
According to the police, the family abducted Nitumoni and her child with the intention to send the baby to their daughter in Himachal Pradesh, the Times of India (TOI) said in a report. However, by the time the couple were held, their son had already boarded a train with the child, the news report said.
Later, the couple’s son Vasanta was tracked down with the help of Jorhat police, and the infant was rescued, Sivasagar Superintendent of Police (SP) Subrajyoti Borah told the newspaper.
The arrest of the trio was recorded on Wednesday. It is yet to be ascertained if Vasanta’s sibling had any role in the murder and abduction.
