Police said Shaikul and four others were arrested Thursday following a complaint by a Faridabad resident at the Cybercrime police station NIT that he was cheated of Rs 1.9 lakh.
A day after an Alwar resident died in the custody of Faridabad Police, with his family alleging he was killed, action has been taken against an inspector and a sub-inspector. According to Faridabad police spokesperson Sube Singh, the officers were transferred to police lines.
The victim, Shaikul Khan, was in police custody in connection with a cybercrime case. Police had said he was taken to a hospital owing to “difficulty in breathing and weakness” Saturday and died on Sunday morning.
Based on a complaint by the victim’s brother, Sabir, police have registered an FIR on charges of murder and common intention (IPC 302 and 34) against the two officers, inspector Basant Kumar and SI Rajesh Kumar.

Family and locals protested against police, alleging that it was a custodial murder. The complaint alleged Shaikul was tortured and beaten up while in custody, leading to his death.
“On July 9, my brother Shaikul was picked up from Chidwai in Alwar on the Mumbai Express-way and taken to Faridabad… On the way, he was beaten up by a team of SI Rajesh Kumar. On July 20, I received a call from the Cyber Cell saying Shaikul had been picked up after he was mistaken for another man. They said he would be released if we could get the other man. I went to the Cyber Cell police station with a friend and spoke to police, who said we had to give them Rs 1.65 lakh for Shaikul to be released… so we (withdrew money)… Later, Rajesh said Shaikul will be released later as he had sustained injuries in a fight. On July 23, my brother Mubarik got a call from the Cyber Cell claiming Shaikul was not well. We went to the hospital and were told he had passed away…,” Sabir alleged in the complaint.
The complainant sought an FIR to be registered under sections of murder, kidnapping and corruption against the two officers. Police, however, denied the family’s allegation that Shaikul was picked up mistakenly.
Police said the post-mortem was conducted in the presence of Judicial Magistrate Aakriti Verma and it was recorded. The report will be released Tuesday, based on which action will be taken, they added.
According to spokesperson Singh, Shaikul said he was feeling weak and had difficulty breathing Friday. “He was taken to a hospital where doctors advised him necessary medicines and he was sent back as they said he didn’t need to be admitted. Shaikul was taken to hospital again Sunday morning, but died during treatment.”
Police said Shaikul and four others were arrested Thursday following a complaint by a Faridabad resident at the Cybercrime police station NIT that he was cheated of Rs 1.9 lakh.
