FBI and NYPD teams up for new cyber security task force to bust hackers

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with coalition of The New York Police Department (NYPD) is creating an anti-terrorism task force, not to tackle terrorists but to track and take down hackers.

In a statement released by the FBI, its agents will be teaming up with Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and NYPD to keep an eye on illegal online activities not just in the U.S. but throughout the region.

FBI has already teamed up with several local authorities in past to stop bank robbery and terrorist attacks, statement claims.

“Cyber crime knows no geographical boundaries and expands the exposure to victims literally throughout the world. This task force extends the reach of law enforcement to help identify, pursue, and prosecute those who commit cybercrime wherever they may be,” said NYPD Police Commissioner William J Bratton.

The United States government and defense sector remains under non-stop cyber attacks with only U.S. Navy facing 110,000 cyber attacks every hour.

“The task force model that has been successfully employed in response to bank robbery and terrorism cases is now being applied to the cyber realm. The FBI continues to develop positive working relationships with our fellow law enforcement officers in our joint efforts to tackle criminal activity, and we look forward to working with our partners at the NYPD and MTA to combat cyber crime,” added FBI Assistant Director George Venizelos.

This New York-based task force is one of 45 that the FBI established in field offices nationwide as part of the Next Generation Cyber Initiative, which focuses on combating the growing threat of cyber crime.

MTA Chairman Prendergast said, “We recognize cyber crime as an expanding threat. The establishment of this interagency task force enables us to better share information and harness the most effective resources of all of our law enforcement partners in order to combat, mitigate, and prosecute the activities of malicious hackers or anyone who would use digital tools to do harm to MTA customers.”

It will be interesting to see how the new anti-terrorism task force will work. As of now, the FBI’s statement doesn’t include details if the task force will monitor online activities of other countries in the region or not.
