This is technical work for the St. Petersburg Police Department, involving the collection, identification and preservation of criminal physical evidence. Work involves technical expertise of average to advanced difficulty in criminal identification matters and evaluating crime scenes, including responding to calls for service, searching for latent fingerprint evidence, photographing and/or videotaping, creating diagrams/sketches, and the gathering, identification, preservation, and documentation of all related evidence. Work includes cooperating with other law enforcement agencies in forensic science matters; and providing court testimony. Work requires the exercise of considerable independent professional judgment and initiative in solving problems through the application of a thorough knowledge of the department policies and practices. An employee in this class will perform field work, which may include lifting or moving heavy objects and may require working in limiting environments such as attics or under vehicles; will work shifts that vary and may require working overnight, weekends and/or being on call; and sometimes performs the required duties in unfavorable conditions.

Essential Qualifications: Qualified applicants must have graduated from an accredited four year college or university with major coursework in forensic science or criminal justice –or– have a certificate of completion from a Crime Scene Technology program supplemented with at least three (3) years of related work experience; must possess and continue to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License; must have considerable knowledge of the methods, practices and techniques of forensic investigation; must have knowledge and experience with crime scene photography and digital video, including the various techniques, appropriate application and related technologies for successful and accurate documentation; must possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; must be proficient in the use of a computer to include well developed skills using the Microsoft Office Suite; must be able to perform field work, move heavy objects, work in unfavorable environments and work a varying, flexible schedule. Desirable Qualifications: Preferred applicants have significant prior experience in police or related law enforcement investigation or identification work.
