Former Red Sox pitcher Austin Maddox, 33, was arrested in a child predator sting (Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office).

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WLNE) — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported Monday that a former Boston Red Sox player was arrested in a five-day child predator sting operation.

The department said 33-year-old Austin Maddox was among 27 men arrested in Operation Valiant Knights, comprised of partners with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

An arrest report said Maddox began communicating with an agent pretending to be an underage girl on April 28, allegedly expressing his intent to have sex with the girl even after she told him she was 14 years old.

Maddox agreed to meet the girl at a pre-arranged location, where law enforcement officers took him into custody after he initially resisted arrest, per authorities.

A video shared by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office shows officers tackling Maddox as he attempted to enter his home.

Maddox is charged with four felony counts, including traveling to meet after using a computer to solicit a child, and is being held in jail on a $300,000 bond.

The right-handed reliever appeared in 13 regular season games with the Red Sox in 2017, making two postseason appearances out of the bullpen.

His last appearance in a professional baseball game was in 2018; he was released by the Red Sox in 2019.
