A former high school teacher has been arrested and charged with raping a teenage student.
Mollie Verkamp, 27, was charged with rape and sodomy last week in Florence, Kentucky after police looked into an ‘inappropriate sexual relationship’ she allegedly had with a 17-year-old student, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives reported began investigation Verkamp in 2019 after officials at the Walton-Verona School district reported that Verkamp had sent sexually explicit videos and text messages to a student in the district, who is now 18 years old. Verkamp most recently taught at Walton Verona High School.
During the investigation, Verkamp told detectives that she had previously taught at a different high school outside Boone County, stating that she had a similar inappropriate relationship with a student who was 17 at the time. A release from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office stated that Verkamp sent and received graphic sexual messages from the 17-year-old while employed at the school.
Authorities said Verkamp had sex with the student at her home in Boone County. She later told detectives that she knew how old the student was and she was aware that being a teacher at the same high school made her a person with a position of authority, according to the release.
At the time of her arrest, Verkamp was not an employee at any school district, although she had taught for three years prior to the 2019-2020 school year.
Verkamp was booked at the Boone County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond at 20%, according to the release.
