The Good Brigade/Getty ImagesBEARDSTOWN – A free car seat safety check event is being planned next week.
The Cass County Health Department is sponsoring the event during National Child Passenger Safety Week, which starts Monday and runs through Sept. 22. The seat checks will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at the health department, 1501 Wall St.
Among the items that will be checked at the event by the child passenger safety technician is if the seats are properly installed, if the useful life of the seat has expired and if the correct seat is being used for the child and/or the vehicle. Participants will also learn about when to promote a child to a forward-facing seat, and when to promote a child to a booster seat.
Registration is required by calling 217-323-2242, extension 1244.
The latest National Highway Traffic Safety Administration research shows that more than one-third of children 12 and younger who died in crashes were not properly restrained. About 59% of child car seats are not installed correctly or are incorrectly used, according to the agency.
Illinois law requires children to ride in a child safety seat until age 8 and rear-facing seats until age 2.
