Free car seat check with Roanoke FireEMS

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Roanoke Fire Department will be hosting a community-wide free car seat check at Roanoke City Fire Station 6 on July 20.

The car seat check will take place on the 3rd Thursday of each month. The event will take place at 1333 Jamison Ave SE Roanoke, VA 24013.

Seven out of Ten car seats that are installed by parents or caregivers are not installed correctly, and car crashes are the number one cause of death of children. According to the City of Roanoke, there are many safety tips on how to protect your child in the car.

  • Buying the right car seat for their age. Children until the age of at least 2 should ride in a rear-facing car seat.
  • Installing the car seat with either the seat belt or lower anchors to secure the seat. Do not use them both especially if your child is forward facing.
  • The harness should be properly fitted to give the best protection.
  • Checking the car seat label to ensure your child meets the height, weight, and age limits of the seat.
