Fun and school supplies at New Buffalo Township Public Safety Day | News | #schoolsaftey

NEW BUFFALO — The Aug. 6 New Buffalo Township Public Safety Day made stocking up on back-to-school supplies fun, educational and tasty (since lunch was offered).

New Buffalo Elementary Teacher Sara Mead said the school supply give-away (made possible by The Pokagon Fund and efforts of teachers and other volunteers) draws more people every year (this was the sixth edition of Public Safety Day).

“I feel like it’s becoming more of a county-wide thing … It’s for all the kids,” she noted.

About half of the supplies had been distributed a half-hour into the Public Safety Day (held at the townships Public Safety Building).

“They have us well-stocked,” Mead said.

“It gets bigger every year,” said New Buffalo Township Supervisor Michelle Heit, who added that about 250 children benefited this year.

She said members of the New Buffalo Township Fire Department (who organize Public Safety Day, which features tours of ambulances, fire trucks and other equipment from area first-responders, an obstacle course, a dunk tank, and of course kids’ fire helmets and stickers) “have a real servant’s heart.”

“They serve the community anyway, but they love putting on these kind of events,” she said.
