DALTON, Georgia (WDEF) – A jury has convicted a north Georgia man of failing to register as a sex offender.
Jerome Walton (Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office)
36-year-old Jerome Walton was convicted of statutory rape in 2005.
But last fall, he gave a false address to authorities.
When an investigator checked on it, he found that Walton wasn’t there.
The officer contacted Walton, who made excuses about why he couldn’t meet him at the residence.
Instead, he fled the area.
Whitfield County officials say Walton was arrested a month later in Seattle, Washington.
So when he went on trial this week, Walton faced two violations, one for the false address and another for not notifying law enforcement that he was moving to Washington.
The jury convicted him on Tuesday.
Since he had two prior convictions of failing to register, he will have to serve the full time of his sentence this time.
Walton faces up to 30 years for each count.
