Governor Signs Two School Safety Laws Authored by Pasadena-Area Senator – Pasadena Now | #schoolsaftey

Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed Senate Bills 671 and 323 into law, authored by Senator Anthony J. Portantino, who represents Pasadena.

SB 671, sponsored by the Glendale Police Department, requires school safety plans to include procedures and protocols to assess and respond to reports or threats of dangerous, violent or unlawful activity occurring on campuses, at school-sponsored events, and/or on a school bus.

SB 323 addresses the need for emergency safety procedures in schools. It also requires schools to implement adaptations for students with disabilities, to ensure that students have safety plans in place if tragedy, such as a school shooting, occurs.

“I am grateful to Governor Newsom recognizing that tragic acts of violence in our schools cannot be ignored,” Senator Portantino said in a statement. “To ensure student safety, it’s important that our schools are prepared to assess and respond to threats of violence on campus.”

Between 2020 and 2021, there were 93 school shootings at public and private elementary and secondary schools nationwide, according to the Report on Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2021, an annual report by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) within the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (IES). This statistic is the highest since the 2000-2001 school years.

Senator Portantino, who represents the 25th Senate District which includes Pasadena and portions of the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys, has authored a number of gun-related laws.
