Govt And Oppn Lock Horns Over Child Safety, Policing | | #childsafety | #kids | #chldern | #parents | #schoolsafey

Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition and treasury benches clashed in the assembly on Tuesday over the remarks that the police were selective in taking action and were ‘subservient’ to local CPM leaders.
The discussion began with Aluva MLA Anwar Sadat moving a notice seeking leave for adjournment motion over the rape of a minor girl in Aluva earlier this month. Citing the incident, he said that the police failed in protecting the life and properties of citizens, which is its primary duty. He said while the police were busy arranging the chief minister’s security the day the incident happened, the culprit had a free run to steal and rape a child who was sleeping with her parents.
Pinarayi Vijayan, who explained how the police nabbed the culprit just like they did in previous cases, said a probe was under way. He praised the police for maintaining high standards in law and order and said an odd-incident was being blown out of proportion. He took strong exception to the charge that home department was in the clutches of a group of individuals in his office and that he had no grip over the force. He said though there are some difficulties because of financial constraints, allegations that police patrolling had stopped because vehicles lacked fuel were baseless.
Opposition leader V D Satheesan countered the CM with figures, stating that 2,879 cases were registered in 2016 for crimes against children and by 2022 it rose to 5,315. Yet the chief minister says the incidents are ‘one-odd’, he said. Satheesan also quoted the government’s reply to a question regarding the statistics of those who committed rape, the number of arrested accused; it said it had no consolidated data.
His comment that it was pitiful that the police were trying to gag a senior citizen like rights activist Grow Vasu while he was trying to raise slogans did not go down well with the ruling front MLAs. The intervention by animal husbandry minister J Chinchurani to clarify the dismissal controversy of a temporary employee for praising ex-CM Oommen Chandy also led to tense moments between MLAs of both fronts.
Speaker A N Shamseer lost his cool several times as ruling front MLAs ignored his repeated requests to stay in their seats and allow the opposition leader to continue his speech. After Congress MLAs walked out of the assembly protesting against the speaker’s decision denying permission for the adjournment motion, it was the turn of IUML MLAs.
As the speaker allowed Chinchurani to make a clarification while deputy leader of opposition P K Kunhalikutty rose for his speech, IUML MLAs, including Kunhalikutty, protested the speaker’s decision and left the house without making a formal walkout speech.
