Police’s Electronic Crime Directorate on Tuesday warned that hacked social media accounts, especially Viber ones, are on the rise in Cyprus in recent days.
Specifically, a number of social media users have received a message from a person they know on Viber informing them that they will receive a code on his behalf, Philenws also reports.
And they subsequently disclose it to that person but this code – in essence – is for the recipient’s own account and not that of the sender of the message.
Thus, the sender is using an already compromised account of another unsuspecting victim.
This method is used to gain the recipient’s trust, which results in his or her own account being compromised, the Police also said.
The public is urged to be particularly cautious about such messages and NOT to ever disclose passwords they receive to any person.
