The man who revealed that George W. Bush was spending his post-White House years painting self-portraits of himself showering will spend four years of his life in prison. Marcel Lazar Lehel, better known as hacker Guccifer, was sentenced on Tuesday in a Romanian court.
Guccifer, a former cab driver, rocketed to Internet fame after hacking into the e-mail accounts of leaders across the U.S. and Europe. In addition to lifting the lid on Bush’s stabs at art, he shared images of George H.W. Bush in a hospital bed, and leaked sensitive messages involving Colin Powell, Hillary Clinton, George Tenet, and more. The hacker famously broke into some of the accounts by guessing the answers to security questions using publicly available facts.
Meanwhile, Bush Jr. has been having the time of his life, exhibiting a collection of his paintings of foreign leaders at his presidential library in Dallas. In an interview with his daughter, Jenna Bush-Hager, the former president revealed how he felt about Guccifer’s antics. “I was annoyed,†he said. “It’s an invasion of one’s privacy. And yeah, I was annoyed. And nor do I want my paintings to get out.†(Keep in mind that Bush—a man who started wars the United States is still fighting—described being disparaged by Kanye West as the “low point†of his entire presidency.)
Bush has said he hopes everyone understands that he paints “in the spirit of friendship.†Maybe he’ll find it in his heart to forgive a man who stole images of paintings from his e-mail, and perhaps he’ll be so kind as to paint a portrait of Guccifer while the hacker spends four years languishing in a prison cell.
