The Portuguese computer hacker whose release of a huge cache of documents led directly to Manchester City being charged with 115 rule breaches by the Premier League has received a suspended prison sentence by a court in Lisbon.

In what became known as the Football Leaks cache, Rui Pinto, 34, released hundreds of thousands of documents and emails to media organisations across Europe in 2018.

A panel of three judges found Pinto guilty of nine offences and imposed a suspended prison sentence of four years.

The Premier League announced charges for the 115 alleged rule breaches by City in February, including for misreporting the pay of players and the former manager Roberto Mancini, as well as sponsorship income.
