Hackers release corporate data stolen from London Drugs, company says | #hacking | #cybersecurity | #infosec | #comptia | #pentest | #hacker

Retailer London Drugs says cybercriminals who stole files from the company’s headquarters last month leaked some data after the company refused to pay the ransom.

The Richmond, British Columbia-based company said in a statement that the files may contain “some employee information,” calling the situation “deeply distressing.”

London Drugs was responding to a social media post from BC cybersecurity analyst Brett Callow that hacking group Lockbit had leaked what it claimed was the company’s data.

The company’s statement said it was “unwilling and unable” to pay a ransom to the hackers, whom it described as “a sophisticated group of global cybercriminals.”

The release added that London Drugs has notified employees whose personal information may have been affected and offered them credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.

According to the company, there is no indication that any patient or customer databases were compromised in the breach that forced London Drugs to close its stores in Western Canada after it was discovered on April 28.

The company says it is currently reviewing files that may have been stolen and will contact affected employees to tell them what personal information was compromised.

London Drugs closed its 79 stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba when it learned of the cyberattack. They only reopened their doors on May 7.

This attack was part of a series of hacking incidents in British Columbia in recent weeks. The government itself was targeted in a “sophisticated” attempt to hack its computer systems.
