On a long, straight road in Las Vegas, near the famous Strip, a self-driving car lurches to a sudden stop.

It has detected a pair of pedestrians who had not yet finished crossing the road, on the far side of the opposite lane.

They were far enough away that any human driver would not have considered stopping, but the car, powered by technology made by Russian technology giant Yandex and being driven around Las Vegas in demonstrations at CES, the world’s biggest technology conference, follows the rules to the letter.

We already know cars are dangerous. Drivers, distracted, human, and prone to error and impatience, make them so.

Without drivers, the dangers are different. Cars powered by robots…
