In a startling revelation, cybersecurity expert Ha Trung Hieu has uncovered that thousands of Wi-Fi passwords in Hanoi are easily hackable. Conducting a comprehensive Wi-Fi password scanning experiment across the city, Hieu, the founder of Cookie Han Hoan, a cybersecurity community, discovered that out of 10,000 networks scanned, approximately 5,000 utilized simplistic passwords like “123456789” and “88888888,” posing a significant cybersecurity risk. This experiment aimed to heighten public awareness regarding the importance of robust cybersecurity measures.

Experiment Unveils Widespread Vulnerability

Utilizing homemade devices equipped with computer Wi-Fi cards and enhanced signal reception antennas, Hieu’s team embarked on a mission to assess the security of Hanoi’s Wi-Fi networks. By attaching these devices to motorbikes and traversing various districts, they successfully collected around 200,000 PMKIDs in a matter of days. Subsequent processing of this data revealed the alarming ease with which 50% of the passwords could be decoded, highlighting common choices such as “12345678,” “camonquykhach,” and “hoilamgi.” The use of hashcat, a publicly available password-hacking tool, further underscored the minimal technical knowledge required for such breaches.

Implications of Wi-Fi Password Leaks

The leakage of Wi-Fi passwords not only grants hackers access to personal networks but also exposes all devices connected to that network to potential threats. This includes smart home devices like automatic doors and security cameras, as well as business resources such as counters and bill printers.
