A Hartford man has been charged with allegedly viewing videos online of children being sexually abused, federal officials said.

Investigators searched the Hartford home of Jonathan Williams, 32, on Thursday and found videos of child sexual abuse on his computer. Williams had previously been convicted of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor in North Carolina in 2015, according to a joint statement from the U.S. Attorney’s office and a special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations for New England.

Investigators from HSI had been looking into a network of people who have been using online chat applications to share child sex abuse content, federal officials said. An account associated with Williams was reportedly active in an online chat application that shared the images and videos.

Williams was arrested Thursday on a federal complaint that charges him with receipt of child pornography, federal officials said. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert A. Richardson in Hartford and was ordered detained.

If convicted, Williams faces a mandatory minimum prison term of 15 years and a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison, federal officials said.
