CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – A ransomware attack is crippling the healthcare system and leaving some patients waiting for prescriptions.

Change Healthcare’s systems remain down for a ninth day now after a ransomware attack last week.

As a result of the attack, healthcare providers are facing financial pressures as reimbursement systems remain down, and doctors have said the outage has left them unable to check patients’ eligibility for treatment or to fill prescriptions electronically.

Change Healthcare said on Thursday a ransomware group is behind the attack. Cyber security expert Steven Weisman said a ransomware attack steals sensitive data from institutions and threatens to publish it unless a ransom is paid; he explains why healthcare systems are prime targets right now.

“Primarily it’s because you’ve got a business that has to be active at all times, it has tremendous amounts of personal information and then, making it vulnerable, it has all kinds of third parties that are constantly contacting,” Weisman said.

Weisman said that companies need to consider getting “whitelisting” software which prevents data from being downloaded unless it is pre-approved, however, such software can be cumbersome for larger organizations.
