Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said Tuesday that he has directed the creation of an investigating committee that will look into the hacking of Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth).

“Nagpa-create din ako ng investigating committee to investigate really the gross negligence na allegations, incompetence, and all that stuff,” Herbosa told Palace reporters.

“An investigation has to happen, due process, the usual… kasi these are government people eh kaya kailangan ng due process,” Herbosa added.

The PhilHealth is a government corporation currently attached to the Department of Health for policy coordination and guidance.

Herbosa also mentioned that he had various meetings with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. regarding the matter.

“Sa hacking? We had several meetings on the hacking basically, di lang naman PhilHealth (it’s not only PhilHealth). PhilHealth was the start then suddenly several other government agencies were also hacked,” he said.

On September 22, PhilHealth was hit by a Medusa ransomware attack, prompting the temporary shutdown of the online systems of the state health insurer.

Hackers reportedly threatened to release the data stolen from its database should the agency fail to pay a ransom.

The PhilHealth said it would not pay and it reiterated that the cyberattack did not compromise the database of its members but affected the application server and workstations of its employees. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
