Wednesday, the Hinsdale Police Department released the numbers of its most recent Memorial Day Click It or Ticket enforcement period, a nationwide campaign that lasted May 22-June 4.

During that two week period, Hinsdale police issued 44 traffic citations, ranging from distracted driving and speeding tickets to suspended licenses and DUIs.

“Through the Memorial Day enforcement campaign, we helped make Illinois roads safer and spread the word that seat belts and child safety restraints save lives,” Deputy Chief Thomas Lillie said in a statement.

According to the release, in 2022 the seat belt compliance rate in Illinois was 93%, slightly higher than the 92% national average reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In 2022 Illinois saw an estimated 4% decrease in traffic related fatalities, from 1334 in 2021 to 1280 in 2022, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

More than half of all individuals killed in car accidents are not wearing seltbelts, the news release said.
