A few days ago I met a woman, attractive and 50ish pushing a cart near Rite Aid. I spoke to her wanting to help, but I sensed her embarrassment as she pushed passed me not wanting to engage. On another occasion as I was exiting my car across from the college, a young woman, perhaps a student, came up saying, “it’s all my fault, it’s all my fault” and sort of fell into my arms. I told her it wasn’t her fault although I didn’t know specifically what she meant. I gave her money for food as she indicated how hungry she was. All the while she was showing embarrassment.
I know these incidents don’t reflect all homeless people’s feelings, but there are many where it does. Of course, the fact we cannot find a parcel of land on which many of these people with tents can land is incredible.
The homeless who are being dragged out of parks should be given access to the fairgrounds until a more suitable solution can be found. As one letter writer mentioned, this is a crime against humanity.
