The Hong Kong Laureate Forum, a partner of the Shaw Prize, has suffered a ransomware attack that encrypted its computer server.

The forum’s secretariat said around 550 people were “most affected” by the incident, which involved their work documents and personal data such as names and email addresses.

The incident was reported to the police, while the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data has also been notified, adding that they will notify individuals affected by the incident through email and SMS messages.

The secretariat said an investigation from their information technology service provider has found that their computer system was breached on the night of September 26 at around 10 p.m.

It noted that the hackers did not specify the ransom amount, only requesting the forum to contact them within 24 hours and follow further instructions to purchase Bitcoin.
