Former MLB player Austin Maddox has been caught up in a major police sting as they attempt to shut down a child predator operation in Florida.

Maddox has been accused of soliciting sex over the internet from people who they believed were children, with the ex-Boston Red Sox player one of 27 implicated in the bust in April.

How Austin Maddox was arrested for his alleged involvement in a child exploitation ring

It comes just four years after Maddox decided to retire from professional baseball after failing to get his career off the ground, despite being handed a lucrative contract to boost his net worth.

After playing baseball in college for the University of Florida, the Jacksonville native was drafted by the Red Sox in 2012. As part of his contract, Maddox also received a signing bonus of $350,000 when penning his deal.

According to The Baseball Cube, he earned the minimum league salary of $535,000 at the time in 2017 – way below the MLB average of just over $4m a year.

While the exact figure of his net worth is not public knowledge, Maddox – who is unmarried – is thought to have built up seven-figure earnings from his seven-year career with the Red Sox.

He made his MLB debut in 2017 after spending several years in the minor leagues, and spent a total of three months on their roster before injury problems forced him to go back to the minor leagues.

His pay increased to $545,000 in 2018, before he suffered a recurrence of his shoulder injury. He was released from the Red Sox in 2019 and opted to retire shortly after.

Why was Austin Maddox arrested?

Jacksonville Sheriff T. K. Waters said Maddox is one of 27 people to have been arrested as part of a huge multi-agency operation. On April 28, it is alleged that Maddox began communicating with an undercover agent who was pretending to be an underage girl.

Despite being informed by the ‘girl’ that they were 14, Maddox expressed his intent to have sex with her, according to the arrest report.

He then agreed to meet her at a pre-arranged location and was arrested by law enforcement on arrival.

The 33-year-old is being held in jail on a $300,000 bond and has been charged with four felony counts, including traveling to meet after using a computer to solicit a child.
