Hyderabad police recover ₹1.49 crore lost by cybercrime victims | #cybercrime | #infosec


The cybercrime unit of the Hyderabad police arrested 24 individuals from six States in April 2025. The arrested are linked to at least 313 cases nationwide, including 53 in Telangana.

The accused were picked up from Delhi (11), Maharashtra (5), Uttar Pradesh (3), West Bengal (3), Bihar (1) and Madhya Pradesh (1). The web of cybercrime stretches across several States, including Karnataka (74 cases), Tamil Nadu (29), Maharashtra (43), Odisha (12) and Punjab (4) and the Union Territory of Puducherry (3), said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cybercrimes) Dara Kavitha.

The police seized 31 mobile phones, 38 cheque books, 29 debit cards, 20 SIM cards and 8 bank passbooks, along with a number of laptops, rubber stamps, shell company seals, QR code scanners, and even 115 soap bars linked to a counterfeit goods fraud during the investigation.

The imitation product case had been registered based on a complaint filed by a Hyderabad-based doctor who said that counterfeits of their skincare brand’s soap products were being made and sold online by unauthorised sellers. Customers reported skin issues and the brand’s reputation took a hit. A case was registered under sections of the IT Act, BNS and the Copyright Act.

In another case, a 40-year-old employee of a private company in Hyderabad was conned of ₹17.39 lakh by a fraudster posing as a Dubai-based software developer. The scammer lured the victim into bogus investment platforms, offering a 70% returns. Once the money was in, the withdrawal options vanished and fresh payments were demanded under the guise of taxes and conversion charges.

The Cybercrime police in April recovered and refunded to the victims ₹1,49,85,333 in different cases, including those in online investment scams, courier service frauds, credit card frauds, customer care impersonation and APK file scams.

Victims are reminded to act fast and immediately report to 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in to improve the chances of recovering blocked or frozen funds.
