IAEA Launches Project to Boost Cybersecurity for Small Modular Reactors Amid Rising Interest | #hacking | #cybersecurity | #infosec | #comptia | #pentest | #ransomware


As the global interest in small modular reactors (SMRs) heightens, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has initiated a Coordinated Research Project (CRP) to enhance computer security for these advanced nuclear reactors. This initiative seeks to address the unique cybersecurity challenges presented by the digital technology inherent in SMRs, according to Elena Buglova, Director of the IAEA’s Division of Nuclear Security.

This three-year project aims to foster international collaboration and technical exchange among experts to improve the nuclear safety and security of SMRs and microreactors against cyber threats. It represents a critical step towards ensuring that the deployment and operation of these reactors are safeguarded against the evolving landscape of cyberattacks.

CRP Overall Objective

The CRP’s primary goal is to advance computer security for SMRs by considering various factors such as safety, security, operational modes, and emergency preparedness. The research will explore methodologies and techniques for assessing and implementing computer security measures, alongside evaluating the role of novel technologies like artificial intelligence and cloud computing in supporting SMR deployment and operation.

Collaborative Efforts and Methodologies

By coordinating with the IAEA’s Division of Nuclear Power, the project underscores the importance of a holistic approach that integrates safety and security considerations. Aline des Cloizeaux, Director of the Division of Nuclear Power, emphasized the potential benefits of moving towards autonomous operations but cautioned that it must be balanced with stringent computer security measures.

The CRP will enable a network of international research institutions to develop approaches, technologies, and guidelines to enhance the resilience of SMRs to cyberattacks. This includes researching defensive computer security architectures and best practices tailored to the unique operational concepts of SMRs.

This project invites worldwide participation from experts in the field, offering an opportunity to contribute to the development of robust security measures for the next generation of nuclear reactors.
