Modus operandi of matrimonial dating scam
The fraudster, who has connected with the victim via a matrimonial website, claims that they are sending a lot of expensive gifts through courier. After a few days, the victim receives a communication from someone who claims to be from the Indian Customs department. The pretender says that the gifts can be collected upon the payment of a duty fee.
The person also said that in case of such events, victims should contact their local police.
How to make a complaint
Step 1: Take a screenshot where the URL of the alleged fake profile is clearly visible.
Step 2: Lodge a complaint in your nearest Police Station describing the complete incident along with proof and other relevant documents.
Step 3: Save the soft copy of all relevant documents and provide them to the Investigating Officer. If possible, provide a hard copy, too.
Remember that such scams can sometimes drag on for months or weeks at a stretch, with the fraudster sending fake receipts of customs charges and photographs of the promised gifts, too.
