Tallinn (Estonia): An Indian contingent was, for the first time, observers in an NATO-run cyber security exercise in Estonia this month. The exercise, the equivalent of an cyber Olympiad, was the largest exercise of its kind in Europe, Tiit Riisalo, Estonian economic affairs and information technology minister, said. Exercise Locked Shields involved 32 NATO countries and a handful of invitees.

India and Estonia, a country of just over a million people, want closer cyber security ties. While India is an IT superpower, Estonia is considered to be one of the top countries in cyber security issues, Riisalo added that one way of close cooperation in cybersecurity, crucial for India keeping in mind the hacker army that China has, are stronger linkages between the two countries. It was important to build trust, he added. He said India knew more about Chinese cyber-related intentions than Estonia.

Speaking about Chinese hackers, Estonian defence minister, Hanno Pevkur, told Times Now that “ there are people who are hired by the Chinese government to do harm,” which is why, he said, like minded countries can get together to help to fight against the hacking menace emanating out of China.
