International criminal ‘ransomware’ organization taken down by US, 13 other countries | #ransomware | #cybercrime

A criminal organization that has done devastating damage to American hospitals and schools has been dismantled.

The ransomware sent out by the group called Lockbit has been debilitating to organizations that have been caught in its trap.

When someone falls prey to the dangerous software it locks up all their data and the criminals demands huge payments for the victim to get it back.

The takedown of Lockbit was one of the largest cybercrime cases ever.

A national report shows in 2023 more than 2,200 schools, hospitals, and governments were hit by ransomware.

Law enforcement from the US and 13 other countries took part.

At least five key members of the group have been arrested or named.

“Lockbit is not the first ransomware variant the DOJ and its international partners has dismantled. It will not be the last,” said US Attorney General Merrick Garland.

In recent years the University of Utah, Premier Family Medical, the City of Murray, and City of West Jordan have all been hit by ransomware attacks.

Victims in the US sent attackers a record 1 billion dollars last year.
