Iowa is the latest state to sue TikTok Inc. over claims that the popular social media platform provides inappropriate content to minors despite advertising that its content is kid-friendly.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in an District Court for Polk County by Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird alleged the app “contains frequent and intense sexual content” and drug use, and TikTok evades parental controls by rating its app as “12+” on the Apple App store even though it should be rated “17+.”

“Those representations are false,” the complaint said. The AGs office said it created a test account that was shown sexual content and drug and alcohol use.

Iowa joins Arkansas-bsp-article-citation>, Utah, and Indiana in suing TikTok over child safety concerns. A judge dismissed Indiana’s lawsuit last year.

The case is Bird v. TikTok Inc., Iowa Dist. Ct., 1/17/24.
