A heavy-drinking convicted sex offender landed himself in hot water after going to probation service meetings while “under the influence of alcohol” and drinking while he was there.
Brian Greenaway was also “making sexual innuendos to people” and it “could not be more ironic” that he was doing that in view of why he was actually there. He had originally been spared prison for making completely inappropriate sexually-charged comments to children that he came into contact with, Hull Crown Court heard.
Greenaway, 58, of Spring Bank West, Hull, had at an earlier hearing on January 16 been given a six-month suspended prison sentence, 30 days’ rehabilitation, a sex offender treatment programme and a monitored tag. He had been ordered to register as a sex offender for seven years.

Greenaway had admitted engaging in sexual communication with a child at West Park, Walton Street, Hull, on July 29, 2020. He was said to have asked a boy under 16 explicit questions about his sexual experience and interests and made sexually explicit comments to a girl about her body, the court heard.
He had been committed to Hull Crown Court for sentence after an earlier hearing before Hull Magistrates’ Court. But he was brought back before Hull Crown Court Court and admitted breaching the order on June 9, 12 and 29.
Abigail Rowley, prosecuting for the probation service, said that Greenaway either failed to attend the Horizon sex offender programme or had been drinking before doing so.
“He attended while under the influence of alcohol and proceeded to drink while he was there,” said Miss Rowley. He later attended while also under the influence of drink.
Judge Kate Rayfield said that it was obvious that Greenaway had still been drinking at the time and that, while he was at the sex offender sessions, he was “making sexual innuendos to people”. This “could not be more ironic” in view of why he was there in the first place.
Hannah Turner, mitigating, said that Greenaway had previously been living at a hostel in Great Union Street, Hull, but this was “the worst decision that he could have made” and he had now moved back in with members of his family.
He was “abstaining” from drink and had a “real determination this time” to avoid slipping back into his old habits of drinking or missing appointments.
“It stems from his alcohol use,” said Miss Turner. “He knows that if he messes this up, he has only himself to blame.”
Judge Rayfield said that the original suspended sentence had been a direct alternative to prison. “That’s what I gave you on the last occasion, an opportunity not to go to prison and to work with the probation service on the problems that caused you to behave in the way that you did,” said Judge Rayfield.

“I am concerned about the sexually inappropriate comments you made, even after you had been sentenced for making sexually inappropriate comments.”
Greenaway was given a 40-day tagged alcohol monitoring order, designed to detect and monitor, through the tag, any alcohol in his system. Judge Rayfield said that, if there was a second breach, she could “almost guarantee” that the suspended sentence would be activated and Greenaway would be jailed. “Good luck,” she said.
