Ransomware attack: Jackson County restores essential services, will soft-launch departments

HE’LL BRING US A LIVE UPDATE IN 30 MINUTES. SOME JACKSON COUNTY OFFICES ARE STILL CLOSED FROM THAT RANSOMWARE ATTACK. AND WE’RE LEARNING SOME REAL ESTATE DEALS HAVE BEEN DELAYED BECAUSE OF IT. KMBC NINE’S MATT EVANS IS LIVE IN RAYTOWN THIS AFTERNOON WITH THAT PART OF THE STORY. MATT. YEAH. COULD IT BE AN ISSUE IF YOU’RE BUYING OR SELLING YOUR HOUSE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE CLOSING DATE? WAS LAST WEEK, OR MAYBE THIS WEEK, OR MAYBE EVEN THE FOLLOWING WEEK? THIS RANSOMWARE ATTACK SHUT DOWN THE JACKSON COUNTY ASSESSMENT COLLECTION AND RECORDER OF DEEDS OFFICES. NEARLY A WEEK AGO NOW, LAST TUESDAY, THAT MEANS SOME PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO BUY OR SELL THEIR HOME ARE STUCK. SINCE THE RECORDER OF DEEDS IS CLOSED, PEOPLE CAN’T RECORD THOSE NEW DEEDS AND YOU ALSO CAN’T DO ANY TITLE SEARCHES TO MAKE SURE THERE AREN’T ANY EXTRA LIENS ON THE PROPERTY THAT HAS CAUSED SOME LENDERS TO HALT CLOSINGS MOST OF LAST WEEK, AND NOW INTO THIS WEEK AS WELL, WHICH IS CREATING QUITE A BACKLOG AND UNCERTAINTY AMONG THOSE BUYING AND SELLING HOMES. WE CLOSE, YOU KNOW, 2 TO 4 HOUSES EVERY SINGLE WEEK. SO THAT’S 2 TO 4 FAMILIES. AND THEN NEXT WEEK WILL BE 2 TO 4 FAMILIES. SO WE’RE TALKING EIGHT FAMILIES AND ALL THEIR MOVING PARTS. AND THEN THE EIGHT HOUSES THAT WERE BUYING OR SELLING WITH THOSE OTHER FAMILIES, IT REALLY DOES AFFECT PEOPLE. NOW SOME TITLE COMPANIES ARE ABLE TO PUSH FORWARD THOSE DEALS. IF EVERYBODY IS OKAY WITH IT. LENDERS, BUYERS, SELLERS WITH ADDITIONAL ADDENDUMS, SEVERAL MORE SIGNATURES REQUIRED IN A PROCESS LIKE THAT. WE DID TALK TO SOME TITLE COMPANIES TODAY WHO TOLD US ABOUT THAT PROCESS. BUT AGAIN, THIS IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE AN ISSUE, AT LEAST FOR ANOTHER DAY OR TWO. WE HEARD FROM JACKSON COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR TROY SCHULTE TODAY WHO SAYS AT THE EARLIEST, THOSE OFFICES WILL BE BACK OPEN ON WEDNESDAY, BUT IT COULD BE UNTIL LATER THIS WEEK AS WELL. WE’RE LIVE IN RAYTOWN. MATT EVANS, KMBC NINE NEWS NOW. WE ALSO LEARNED TODAY THE ATTACK IS AFFECTING THE JACKSON COUNTY PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE. A SPOKESPERSON TELLS US IT HAS BEEN CHECKING LAPTOPS FOR MALWARE. THE MALWARE WAS FOUND ON SOME OF THE LAPTOPS

Ransomware attack: Jackson County restores essential services, will soft-launch departments

Jackson County says it has restored essential services and is softly reopening key county offices following a ransomware attack earlier this month. Jackson County will soft-launch the Assessment, Collection, and Recorder of Deeds departments on Tuesday. “The scale of the attack was massive, making the rapid recovery a remarkable achievement by our IT team,” Jackson County Executive Frank White said. “Their expertise and relentless hard work have minimized disruption and exemplified resilience in the face of such challenges.”Assessment services will be by appointment only, with disrupted appointments being rescheduled as a priority and walk-in services available from April 22. Residents are encouraged to use secure online payment options to avoid wait times, and new weekend hours will be offered for both the collection and assessment departments. Property records and marriage license applications are available online. Jackson County County Administrator Troy Schulte said a Russian group likely conducted the ransomware attack.
