Kerala Police Unveils Specialized Cyber Division to Combat Cybercrimes Effectively

The Kerala Police is set to revolutionize its fight against cybercrime with the formation of a specialized Cyber Division. With approval from the Home Department, the division, centralizing all cybercrime-related efforts, will be based in Thiruvananthapuram.

Until now, Kerala’s cybercrime response was fragmented, scattered across various locations and departments. From cyber operations at police headquarters to the hi-tech crime inquiry cell under the Crime Branch and Cyber Dome units spread across districts, the state’s cybercrime initiatives lacked a unified structure. Each of the 20 police districts in Kerala also operated its own cyber police stations.

Enhanced Efficiency and Effectiveness

The establishment of the Cyber Division aims to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in combating cybercrimes. The division will be led by an IG-rank officer and will comprise 466 personnel, including two SPs and four DySPs. The consolidated efforts will focus on cyber patrolling, crime research, and case investigations, thereby streamlining the process.

Officers of the Cyber Division are slated to receive training at the Kerala Digital University, with 350 policemen having already completed their training. The move aims to consolidate resources and expertise to better address the challenges of cybercrimes. The department will develop expertise in areas such as hacking, network security, risk management, and digital forensics, equipping the force sufficiently to tackle the state’s cyber issues.
