FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — Carroll Middle School students are learning how to recognize and manage the stress in their lives.

“Their stress besides their schoolwork, now they’re maybe feeling a little behind from the last five months. And so catching up and feeling like they’re on track with other students their age is a big stressor. And family situations that may have come about due to COVID,” said Michele Vince, an 8th grade health teacher.

Vince incorporates “brain breaks” into all of her classes as a way to allow students to regroup and refocus in order to learn more effectively.

Carroll Middle School students learn to recognize the alarm stage of stress and analyze their response to it.

“I’m always excited to come to this class because you get a relief from it, and you’re just learning all that and teachers understand that,” student Jaxon Sparks said.

Managing stress is something just about everyone could learn to do a bit better, and student Olivia Diss had some advice.

“I would say to manage your stress the best, I would recognize it and then use techniques like looking at it from a different perspective and deep breathing and just kind of relaxing and not thinking about it that much,” she said.
